Joanna Lynden (BMI),
composer, arranger, keyboardist, choral director, and music educator, has been writing choral arrangements since
1978. She received musical training at the American Conservatory
of Music in Chicago, Mills College, and the Universities of Washington and Colorado. At Mills she studied with composer Terry Riley and master music teacher William Mathieu.
In the late 1970's Ms. Lynden directed the innovative mixed chorus
based in San Francisco, Voix Céleste,
a group performing many
original compositions. Her suite for mixed chorus, "Rituals," based
on Native American poetry, was commissioned by the Tandy Beal
Dance Company and premiered in Santa Cruz during the 1988
production of "Khoros." In 1989 she formed the Boulder based
women's a cappella ensemble,
IRIS,
a renowned group that recorded
three albums over its course of 13 years. Ms. Lynden composed or
arranged much of the material that IRIS
sang under her directorship.
"The Goddess Descending", produced by Ms. Lynden,
is a multi-media show for women's chorus, dancers, and storyteller.
She was awarded several arts grants for this production, in which she
set poetry by various 20th century women poets to music for strings,
voices, and percussion.
In her role as a church organist and musician, she has also
composed choral pieces suitable for liturgical use.
Currently Ms. Lynden directs the StarHouse Choral Ensemble in
Boulder, CO, is studying East Indian vocal music, and continues
to compose for voices and instruments.
